Meet Max and Cress

Cress sees Max at a book signing.

“Excuse me.” A deep British voice stops me mid-rise. The tall man I noticed earlier makes his way over to the table with a copy of the book open to the title page.

“Groucho Marx once said, ‘Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.’” He smiles and holds out his hand. “Hello, I’m Max Grant.”

Dark hair with threads of silver running though and glasses with round, thin black frames, he’s disconcertingly good looking, I think, stealing a glance as I pick up a pen.

Max sees Cress in a television interview.

The other [woman] is probably in her late thirties, pushing forward on the slanted sofa as she struggles to keep her feet on the floor. It is the woman from the restaurant although she looks professionally made up this morning. Her shoulder-length curls are tamed and pulled back from her face. A film of makeup makes her skin look like porcelain, although I can see a flush rising up her neck as she fidgets during the voice over. Her eyes, magnified by large round wire-rimmed glass, flash green, then amber. Her eyes ... I focus in. What I see stops me in my tracks.”
